Hitachi Data Systems is planning to gain more traction in Africa with Shoden purchase

Hitachi data systems has completed its acquisition of South African data center solutions provider Shoden Data Systems, a move which gives it a strong footprint in the African market.

Hitachi said it plans to extend its channel presence in South Africa through Shoden’s operations, which will continue working under its current business name.

It announced the purchase in December last year and had been waiting on approval by the South African Competition Commission and other regulatory bodies.

Hitachi already makes up 65% of Shoden’s product sales –t he rest is made up by IBM and Oracle lines.

Hitachi Data System EMEA Senior VP and general manager Niels Svenningsen said Hitachi recognises the growth potential of Africa.

"Across the globe we are helping customers transform aging data centers into information centers that closely align business objectives with infrastructure performance to optimize return on assets,” Svenningsen said.

“We can now bring that experience and expertise to bear in a market with huge growth potential."

He said Hitachi plans to help improve service levels and deploy new applications at Shoden, while growing its global brand across Africa.
